Live-Action Japanese Fatal Frame Film’s 1st Trailer Posted

Film based on horror game franchise to open September 26

The Cinema Today website debuted a trailer for the Japanese film of Tecmo‘s Fatal Frame (Zero orProject Zero) horror game franchise. The film will open in Japan on September 26.

The original game follows a heroine who uses a Camera Obscura that can photograph spirits. She engages with spirits in a dilapidated Japanese-style house and other settings that gave the title (and its many follow-ups) a particular Japanese ambiance. The film will actually adapt a novelization of the game by MPD-Psycho creator Eiji Ohtsuka.

Ayami Nakajō and Aoi Morikawa, two popular models in the Japanese magazine Seventeen, will star. The story’s setting has been moved from a Japanese house to an old school dormitory. In the story, Aya Tsukimori (Nakajō) becomes part of an ancient “cursed incantation” at a girls’ high school dormitory. Michi Kazato (Morikawa) is a classmate who is pursuing the mysterious disappearances at the dormitory.

Mari Asato (Bilocation) is directing the film, and principal photography began on March 27. Nakajō made her acting debut in the 2012 live-action television series Kuro no Onna Kyōshi (Black Female Teacher), and Fatal Frame will be her film debut. She acknowledged the pressure she feels due to this, and said that she uses it to strive hard in the daily shoots.

The franchise is also planned get a Hollywood adaptation after the current project is completed.

The original game debuted on the Sony PlayStation 2 console in 2001, and it spawned several sequels and remakes on multiple platforms.
