Strobe Edge Shōjo Romance Manga Gets Live-Action Film

Creator Io Sakisaka‘s Ao Haru Ride manga also inspires TV anime, live-action film

The August issue of Shueisha‘s Bessatsu Margaret magazine is announcing on Saturday that a live-action film adaptation of Io Sakisaka‘s Strobe Edge manga has been green-lit. The shōjoromance manga ran in Bessatsu Margaret from 2007 to 2009.Viz Media published the 10th and final volume of the manga in North America in May, and it describes the manga’s story:


What is love, anyway? Ninako Kinoshita’s friends tell her it’s one thing, but Ninako wonders what this mysterious feeling really is. When she meets Ren Ichinose, a handsome, enigmatic guy who all the girls worship, her life takes an unexpected turn. With just a few words and a smile, he changes her world…

American Library Association’s (ALA’s) Young Adult Library Services Association named the manga in its 2014 list of Great Graphic Novels for Teens. Sakisaka is now serializing another manga called Ao Haru Ride inBessatsu Margaret, and that manga is inspiring both a television anime this summer and a live-actionfilm this December.



Beyond the Boundary Gets Anime Film in Spring 2015

Sentai Filmworks licensed original television series that aired last year

The official website for Kyoto Animation‘s Beyond the Boundary(Kyōkai no Kanata) anime series announced on Wednesday that the series will get an anime film in spring 2015. The seventh Blu-ray Disc volume of the television series also made the same announcement when it shipped on Wednesday.

The seventh volume also included episode 0, titled “Shinnome” (Daybreak), as well as two new “Kyōkai no Kanata Idol Saiban! ~Mayoi Nagaramo Kimi o Sabaku-min (Beyond the Boundary Idol Trial! Those Who Judge You Even While Lost) shortsKyoto Animation previously posted the first three shorts online.

The dark fantasy follows a high school second-year student named Akihito Kanbara (KENN). Although the boy appears human, he is half Yōmu and invulnerable to wounds because he can heal quickly. One day, Akihito meets first-year student Mirai Kuriyama (Risa Taneda) when it seems she is about to jump from the school rooftop. Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is unique even among the Under World Warriors. Disturbing events begin to unfold after Akihito saves Mirai.

The television anime premiered in Japan in October and Crunchyroll streamed the anime into several countries as it aired. Sentai Filmworks also announced in October that it licensed the anime for North America.

Nagomu Torii‘s original Kyōkai no Kanata light novel received an honorable mention in the novel category of the Kyoto Animation Award program in 2011.

Live-Action Japanese Fatal Frame Film’s 1st Trailer Posted

Film based on horror game franchise to open September 26

The Cinema Today website debuted a trailer for the Japanese film of Tecmo‘s Fatal Frame (Zero orProject Zero) horror game franchise. The film will open in Japan on September 26.

The original game follows a heroine who uses a Camera Obscura that can photograph spirits. She engages with spirits in a dilapidated Japanese-style house and other settings that gave the title (and its many follow-ups) a particular Japanese ambiance. The film will actually adapt a novelization of the game by MPD-Psycho creator Eiji Ohtsuka.

Ayami Nakajō and Aoi Morikawa, two popular models in the Japanese magazine Seventeen, will star. The story’s setting has been moved from a Japanese house to an old school dormitory. In the story, Aya Tsukimori (Nakajō) becomes part of an ancient “cursed incantation” at a girls’ high school dormitory. Michi Kazato (Morikawa) is a classmate who is pursuing the mysterious disappearances at the dormitory.

Mari Asato (Bilocation) is directing the film, and principal photography began on March 27. Nakajō made her acting debut in the 2012 live-action television series Kuro no Onna Kyōshi (Black Female Teacher), and Fatal Frame will be her film debut. She acknowledged the pressure she feels due to this, and said that she uses it to strive hard in the daily shoots.

The franchise is also planned get a Hollywood adaptation after the current project is completed.

The original game debuted on the Sony PlayStation 2 console in 2001, and it spawned several sequels and remakes on multiple platforms.

The story follows Lupin and his partners in crime before they became a gang. They infiltrate the high security of the Ark of Navarone, a gigantic fortress-like safe, to lay claim to the Crimson Heart of Cleopatra within. It is said that whoever possesses this treasure shall “unite the world.”

Hotei, the singer and guitarist who gained a new wave of international fans with Kill Bill‘s use of his “Battle Without Honor or Humanity” song, is performing the theme song “Trick Attack -Theme of Lupin the Third.” The song will play during a climactic scene in the movie, and this trailer will start playing in theaters this Saturday.

The movie stars (from left to right in the images below) Tadanobu Asano as Detective Kōichi Zenigata,Gou Ayano as Goemon Ishikawa, Shun Oguri as Lupin, Tetsuji Tamayama as Daisuke Jigen, and Meisa Kuroki as Fujiko Mine. An original character, Lupin’s nemesis Michael Lee, will be played by Jerry Yan(Meteor Garden) of the popular Taiwanese group F4. Other cast members include South Korean actorKim Joon (South Korean Hana Yori Dango) and Thai actor Thanayong Wongtrakul (The Man from Nowhere).

The first live-action adaptation of Lupin III in four decades will open on August 30. The movie began filming on October 3 and finished principal photography on December 26. The production shot in Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines.

The film is now in the middle of the final steps of editing, and the staff aims to complete post production and the film itself at the end of June. Ryuhei Kitamura (Azumi) is directing the film, and Mataichirō Yamamoto wrote the script.

Assassination Classroom Manga Gets TV Anime & Live-Action Film

Yusei Matsui‘s comedy inspires 2015 TV anime after inspiring 2013 event anime

The July issue of Shueisha Comic News is announcing this month that a television anime and a live-action film of Yusei Matsui‘s Assassination Classroom manga have been green-lit. The television anime will air on the Fuji TV station next year.

Viz Media will publish the first volume of the manga in North America in December. Viz Media describes the story:

A humorous and action-packed story about a class of misfits who are trying to kill their new teacher – an alien octopus with bizarre powers and super strength! The teacher has just destroyed the moon and is threatening to destroy the earth – unless his students can destroy him first. What makes things more complicated is that he’s the best teacher they’ve ever had!

Matsui launched Assassination Classroom in Shueisha‘s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2012. The series ranked number seven in Japan’s top-selling manga for 2013. It already inspired an event anime by director Keiji Gotoh(Kiddy GradeSengoku CollectionUta∽Kata) and the studio Brains Base last year. That animefeatured the following cast:

This year’s 30th issue of Shueisha‘s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine reported on Monday that a “shocking,” “super-important announcement” for the Assassination Classroom (Ansatsu Kyōshitsu) manga will be made in the following issue, which is scheduled to go on sale on June 30. The Internet domain name “” was registered on Sunday. There is currently no website at the web address.

1st Attack on Titan Compilation Film’s Teaser Streamed

Guren no Yumiya, the 1st of 2 films, will open on November 22

The teaser trailer for the Shingeki no Kyojin Zenpen ~Guren no Yumiya~ (Attack on Titan Part I: Crimson Bow and Arrow) film debuted on Saturday.

The earlier Attack on Titan television anime is being recompiled into two theatrical films. The first film will open on November 22. The second film, Shingeki no Kyojin Kōhen ~Jiyū no Tsubasa~(Attack on Titan Part II: Wings of Freedom), will open next year. (The films are named after Linked Horizon‘s popular opening themes for the television anime.)

The new films will feature new dubbing and a 5.1ch remaster with returning voice cast members such as Yuuki Kaji (Eren Jaeger), Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman), and Marina Inoue (Armin Arlelt). The first film will cover episodes 1 through 13, while the second film will cover 14 through 25. They will once again feature director Tetsuro Araki at Wit Studio and composer Hiroyuki Sawano.

The first set of advance tickets for the first film went on sale on June 21. People who order during the first advance sales period will receive one of two mini B6-size clear files with a special illustrations by character designer Kyoji Asano.

Date A Live Gets Theatrical Film

The official Twitter account for Date A Live announced this Saturday that the series will get a film on the big screen.

The first season of the television anime aired in 2013 and the second season is currently airing. FUNimation Entertainmentlicensed both anime series and describes the story:

Keitaro Motonaga (GetbackersJormungand) directed both anime seasons based on Koushi Tachibana‘s light novels at AIC PLUS+ with visual director Hisashi Saito (HaganaiHeaven’s Lost Property). Hideki Shirane (Hayate the Combat ButlerQueen’s Blade: Rebellion) was charge of the series scripts, and Takaaki Suzuki (Strike WitchesLast Exile) advised on the world setting, as he has done other anime and manga. Satoshi Ishino (Excel SagaNogizaka Haruka no Himitsu) designed the characters based on Tsunako‘s original novel illustrations. Mika Akitaka (Martian Successor NadesicoGalaxy Fraulein Yuna) designed the mecha, and Go Sakabe (Gosick theme songs) scored the soundtrack with sound director Yasunori Ebina (A Certain Magical Index,Naruto) at Nippon Columbia.
